Hack June

Hack June

Following the welcome you gave to June's lovely hack, I'll explain how I made it. June is the pretty open-back dress we need for summer. For this version, I wanted to create a ruffle at the bottom of the skirt to give it a bohemian feel that we love so much. I'll explain the step-by-step process to modify your pattern and make this hack!

1. Length

First, you will redefine the desired length for the bottom of the dress. For pieces 2 and 4 of the pattern, starting from the bottom of the pattern, redefine a cutting line at the desired height.

2. The steering wheel

In a second step, you will work on the ruffle pieces. For my hack, I directly cut two rectangles 1.30m wide by the height removed from the skirt plus 2cm (the two centimeters compensate for the seam allowances necessary for the assembly between your base skirt and the ruffle). You can make smaller or even longer ruffles and thus revise the length of your dress!

You can even have fun making successive ruffles. Just keep in mind that to have pretty gathers, you will need a ruffle that is 1.5 to 2 times wider than the width of the bottom of your revised skirt. Be careful because here the pieces are to be cut on the fold, so don't forget to multiply by two for your calculations to get the width of the bottom of the front skirt and the bottom of the back skirt.

For example, if your revised bottom for the front is 35 cm on the pattern, multiply by two to get the total width (here 70 cm). For your 1.5 gathered flounce, you will need a rectangle 105 cm wide. For a 2 gathered flounce, you will need a rectangle 140 cm wide. Do not hesitate to divide your flounces in two for the front or the back in case the calculated width is wider than the width of your fabric :)
